Listening to understand: The role of high-quality listening on speakers' attitude depolarization during disagreements 💡👂✨

A recent study in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology tested something surprisingly simple: what happens when people feel genuinely listened to during a disagreement. Researchers ran four experiments where participants discussed contentious topics with listeners who demonstrated either poor, moderate, or high-quality listening. When listeners showed real attention, understanding, and non-judgmental presence, speakers became less defensive and their views grew less extreme. The researchers found that feeling heard created psychological safety, which allowed people to reflect on their own beliefs more openly. In other words, listening did not change people’s minds through argument—it changed the conditions under which people think about their own ideas.
